Ear Plugs For Musicians

A musician’s workplace can include concerts and festivals which often involve prolonged exposure to high sound levels. Repeated exposure to noise above 85dB is widely recognised as a risk factor for permanent damage[1] and music rehearsals, live performances and concerts often exceed this.

As musicians rely heavily on their hearing, having effective hearing protection is a vital part of long-term ear health. Wearing ear plugs while practising, performing and listening to live music can protect you from the effects of overexposure to dangerous levels of sound, including the potential to develop lower ear fatigue or tinnitus, which is a noise in your head or ears without a direct external source.[3]

Musician-specific hearing protection is designed to attenuate overall sound levels whilst preserving the clarity of music. Unlike standard ear plugs, they allow musicians to perform, rehearse and listen safely without distortion.

What are the benefits of hearing protection for musicians?

Hearing protection offers a wide range of benefits for musicians, event stewards, concert security, and anyone regularly exposed to high noise levels. Those working in  loud sound environments can use custom hearing protection to benefit from:

  • Reduced risk of tinnitus
  • Reduction in lower ear fatigue during extended exposure
  • Preservation of sound quality and balance
  • Improved focus and overall performance

A UK survey found that a large proportion of professional musicians report hearing problems including hearing loss and tinnitus as a result of their work[4] . There are several studies that suggest people working within the music industry are close to twice as likely to develop tinnitus compared to those within quieter industries, due to noise exposure from loud sound[5].

In-ear monitors

In-ear monitors (more commonly called IEMs) are small earphones worn by musicians during rehearsals and live performances. Instead of listening to sound through loud stage speakers (wedges), musicians hear a personalised audio mix directly in their ears.

Benefits include:

  • Clear, personalised mix tailored to your role
  • Improved performance through consistent, precise monitoring
  • Reduced stage noise for better focus
  • Ideal for vocalists, drummers, and orchestra members
  • Fewer speakers, less feedback

Best suited for: Regular performing musicians in venues, rehearsals, or at-home settings, particularly for vocalists and drummers looking for a cleaner, more controlled live setup.

Off-the-shelf ear plugs

Off-the-shelf (or instant-fit) ear plugs are ready-made ear plugs designed to provide immediate hearing protection, offering a simple and affordable way to reduce noise exposure at concerts, rehearsals, and loud environments without the need for custom fitting.

Benefits include:

  • Affordable hearing protection
  • Easy to use
  • Effective noise reduction for general environments
  • Portable and convenient for on-the-go use

Best suited for: those with occasional exposure to high or potentially harmful dB levels, such as concerts, rehearsals, or noisy social settings.

How are custom ear plugs made?

All custom moulded ear plugs require an impression of your ear, taken by an expert audiologist. Impressions are custom moulds of a person’s ear canal and outer ear, this allows precision in sizing and comfort when making the hearing aids. Once the process is complete, the unique impressions are sent to the manufacturer. The hearing appointment proceeds with further ear health checks which will be conducted for examination.

How do I book an appointment?

At The Hearing Clinic Partnership, our experienced audiologists want to provide you with the perfect solution tailored to your needs and your lifestyle.

During a hearing protection appointment, they will begin with a consultation to discuss your needs and examine your ears. They will evaluate factors like your noise exposure levels, work environment, and personal preferences to determine the most suitable type of hearing protection for you.

If custom-moulded earplugs are recommended, the audiologist will take precise impressions of your ear canals to create earplugs moulded to fit your ears perfectly for maximum comfort and noise protection. You will also receive thorough training on properly inserting, wearing, cleaning, and maintaining your specific hearing protection devices to ensure effective use.
