Tents at a camping spot with the rising sun.

With the summer holidays fast approaching for many of us, that can only mean one thing – camping. And whilst some of us can’t resist the call of the wild, the sounds of nature can disrupt a good night’s sleep, especially when the birds start chirping in the early hours of the morning…

But there is one handy little lifesaver that will almost certainly guarantee you a quiet night’s sleep. Let us introduce you to your next camping must-have: ear plugs!

Should you wear ear plugs for sleeping?

When you go camping, there’s a whole list of essentials you can’t live without: toilet paper, sleeping bags, a torch and maybe some marshmallows roast on your campfire. But here’s why ear plugs should be on your packing list too!

One thing that can ruin any camping experience is not getting a good night’s sleep. This is because there are lots of environmental factors which disrupt our sleep, whether that’s the sound of wildlife, neighbouring campers partying to the early hours, stormy weather, or the festival you are camping at. These external noise sources can be combated through the wearing of ear plugs whilst you sleep

What are the benefits of using ear plugs for camping?

  • The main benefit of using ear plugs is of course the sound reduction.

They help to block out unwanted noise and can improve the quality of your sleep. Of course, the amount of sound reduction ear plugs offer very much depends on the type of ear plug. For those who want the best sound reduction, we would recommend custom ear plugs.

  • Another great benefit of ear plugs is the hearing protection they provide.

If you are planning to camp at a festival or other large events, it’s important to take care of your hearing as noise exposure is the second biggest cause of hearing loss. Exposure to sounds above 85dB can cause damage to your hearing so it’s really important to take the steps to protect your ears. It’s important to note that different types of ear plugs do different jobs, so ear plugs for sleeping shouldn’t be used as hearing protection as they are not designed for this purpose and do not offer the right level or quality of protection.

Types of ear plugs for camping

There are three main types of ear plugs you can get, all of which provide varying degrees of sound reduction.

  • Foam ear plugs – Available in most shops and pharmacies, foam ear plugs are basic but they do the job and offer some level of sound reduction.
  • Silicone ear plugs – These are a great middle-of-the-road option. Due to their design, they sit comfortably within our ears and are even antimicrobial.
  • Custom-moulded ear plugs – For those who want the best sound reduction, custom-moulded ear plugs will do just that. They can reduce ambient noises by approximately 25dB which is a lot, and will be especially noticeable in those early hours when you are sound asleep.
