Hearing aids have transformed in the last decade, but one challenge persisted: how to eliminate annoying high-pitched feedback. Oticon’s latest hearing aid changes everything – enjoy socialising with friends and family this spring, not missing out on those special sounds that make it the season it is. This incredible new device deserves a closer look.

A busy restaurant, a noisy coffee shop, a chat over a glass of wine at your local pub – all challenging situations for anyone with hearing loss. Hearing aids help, but it’s still a difficult task: your hearing aid’s electronics need to work out the difference between the voice you’re listening to and the background noise.

However, technology marches forward. And that means hearing aids are getting better and better. Danish firm Oticon is very much at the forefront of hearing aid tech, with a 100-year heritage to draw from. For proof, look no further than its new 2019 hearing aid, the Oticon Opn STM.

Closing the gap to normal hearing

The Oticon Opn S range of hearing aids raises the bar for what a hearing aid can achieve, packed with a long list of features and new technologies, from its powerful Oticon ON App for your smartphone to a compact docking bay to recharge its batteries.

But what you really want to know is how it improves your day-to-day hearing experience. Firstly, the Oticon Opn S makes it easier to pick out individual voices against noisy sound environments, like busy coffee shops and restaurants. In fact, studies have shown that Oticon Opn S users can experience speech understanding at the same level as people with normal hearing in noisy environments. It’s the kind of performance that lets hearing aid users close the gap to normal hearing.

Wave goodbye to the whistling noise

Secondly, the Oticon Opn S eliminates the whistling (or feedback) noises common to many hearing aids. Feedback happens when the amplified sounds being channelled into your ear by the hearing aid are mistakenly picked up by the microphone on the outside of the hearing aid. It’s annoying and often unpleasant, and until now it’s been a major challenge for hearing aid manufacturers. Oticon’s OpenSound Optimizer technology shuts down the feedback before it even occurs, letting you live life without fear of feedback.

Taking the effort out of listening

Even with a hearing aid, it takes mental effort to listen to a conversation in noisy environments. Oticon’s BrainHearing technology reduces the effort needed, using the Oticon Opn S’s sensitive multiple-microphone array to analyse the nearby acoustic environment 56,000 times a second. This helps you pick out the voice, or voices, you want to hear.

If you already have an Oticon Opn hearing aid, it might be worth upgrading: the Oticon Opn S is proven to deliver even better speech understanding in noisy environments compared to the previous generation of Oticon Opn hearing aid.

The Oticon Opn S is available in four models:

  • The miniRITE is the baby of the group, but also the most discreet.
  • The miniRITE R a new size of hearing aid from Oticon. It’s fully rechargeable, so you can say goodbye to fiddling with replacement batteries.
  • The miniRITE T includes a telecoil so you can connect to hearing loops in public places. Also features a rechargeable battery.
  • The BTE PP is the largest and most powerful model. With an LED status light and rechargeable battery.
